The reassuring part is that median intake in the United States, around 14 milligrams for men and 9 for women, already sits at or above the RDA, so most people are covered by diet alone.

Oysters are in a class of their own for zinc, but meat, poultry, and seafood are the everyday backbone, followed by legumes, seeds, nuts, and dairy. Animal sources have an edge because their zinc absorbs more readily than the zinc in plants.

The Zinc–Copper Balance: Why the Upper Limit Matters
Zinc's most important safety issue is its relationship with copper. The two minerals compete for absorption in the gut, so a steady high intake of zinc gradually pushes copper out, and copper deficiency causes anemia and, over time, nerve damage. This is why zinc has a tolerable upper intake level of 40 milligrams a day for adults, counting food and supplements together.
What Zinc Does: Colds, Skin & Testosterone
Zinc attracts a lot of health claims, so it is worth separating what the evidence actually supports from what it does not. In all three of the areas people ask about most, the honest pattern is the same: zinc helps when you are low or the situation is specific, but it is not a magic booster for people who already have enough.
Does zinc help with colds?
There is reasonable evidence that zinc, taken as lozenges within about 24 hours of the first symptoms, can modestly shorten the duration of a common cold. That effect requires short-term doses above the everyday RDA, which is why cold lozenges come in higher amounts, and it is meant for brief use, not daily supplementation. Taking high-dose zinc every day to "prevent" colds is not supported and risks the copper problem above.
Is zinc good for your skin?
Zinc plays a genuine role in skin health, because it is essential for wound healing and maintaining the skin barrier, and deficiency itself shows up as skin lesions and slow-healing wounds. It also has an established place in managing acne, which is why dermatologists sometimes use it. That said, zinc helps most when it is correcting a shortfall or treating a specific condition under guidance, rather than acting as a general skin cure for everyone.
Does zinc boost testosterone?
Zinc is necessary for normal testosterone production, so a genuine zinc deficiency can lower testosterone, and correcting that deficiency restores it. But for men who already have adequate zinc, there is no good evidence that extra zinc raises testosterone above normal or improves performance. The "zinc for testosterone" idea holds only in the context of fixing a real deficiency, not as a booster for men with normal levels.
Zinc for Vegetarians & Vegans
Plant-based eaters need to pay closer attention to zinc for two reasons. First, plant sources like legumes, grains, nuts, and seeds contain less absorbable zinc than meat. Second, these same foods are high in phytates, compounds that bind zinc in the gut and reduce how much the body takes up. Because of this, vegetarians and vegans may need up to around 50 percent more zinc than the standard RDA to compensate. Practical fixes help: soaking, sprouting, and fermenting grains and legumes lowers their phytate content and frees up more zinc, and leaning on pumpkin seeds, cashews, chickpeas, and fortified foods keeps intake up.
Signs of Low Zinc
Because zinc touches so many systems, deficiency produces a scattered set of symptoms rather than one clear sign. Common ones include a weakened immune response with frequent infections, slow wound healing, loss of taste or smell, hair loss, skin problems, and, in children, delayed growth. The catch is that every one of these can also stem from other causes, so symptoms alone do not confirm a shortfall; a blood test is the only way to be sure. Certain groups are more prone to low zinc, including vegetarians, older adults, people with digestive conditions such as Crohn's, heavy drinkers, and those recovering from certain surgeries. Persistent symptoms are a reason to see a doctor rather than to start supplementing blindly.
How Much Zinc Is Too Much?
The tolerable upper intake level is 40 milligrams a day for adults from food and supplements combined. Short-term higher doses, such as cold lozenges, are used deliberately for a few days, but sustained intake above 40 milligrams invites trouble. The first signs of too much zinc are digestive: nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and loss of appetite. The more serious, slower risk is the copper depletion described earlier.
Who Needs More Zinc
A few groups have a genuine reason to focus on zinc. Vegetarians and vegans, as above, may need more because of lower absorption. Zinc absorbs best on an empty stomach, but it can cause nausea that way for some people.
